Our notion of coverage has changed over the past few years at LaCartita.com to include more topics germane to the cultural context of interconnected countries and cities.
In 2015, the day to day tasks involved deploying contributing writers to conflict zones or establishing connections with local movements in Mexico and this allowed us an in-depth understanding of our culture’s major goals and problems.
As time has progressed, one realizes that problems of that nature: insecurity, corruption and people’s responses to these processes as well as feats within their regions, are almost overlapping to Mexico and Colombia. Thus, we’ve expanded that logic to select cities in Colombia to surface stories not commonly told on other outlets.
Due to the historical ties between Mexicans and the US Southwest, we have continued to provide coverage on the cities where there is a majority Mexican presence in the US Southwest. This while also extending the process to Colombia and related cities within the US.
The breadth, then, has required increased automation where we curate the end result in a human in the loop process, leveraging social media signal and generative AI to render these trends in a human interpretable way. We continue to expand on the front of responsible journalism, but wish to maintain an eye on the latest technologies because the ability to surface and narrate new stories. Thanks for reading.
